Marc Johnson Do They Know More?

This is a cross-post of a blog that I write called "MnEdTech". The original can be found at: http://mnedtech.blogspot.com/ OK... While I'm not ready to admit being "long of tooth" yet, I have started to notice that I am not among the young people at staff meetings, training sessions or other gatherings of educators anymore. Today, Jon Larson, the ECMECC technology integration specialist was lamenting the number of times he had heard p… Continue

Dawn Nelson Our challenge and our opporunity

An interesting discussion has been taking place regarding the requirements for the media specialist in a building. At this time in Minnesota, schools are not required to have a licensed media specialist and there is not requirement for media center staffing. It is up to the administrators how they chose to staff their media centers. They can choose to staff with a licensed media specialist, a teacher who likes books, teachers during their prep times, paras, or not at all. Whether or not that per… Continue

Mary Alice Anderson Seeking input on authors: T. DeGazelle. D. Dorcas, R. Jacobson

I attended the author event a the MEMO conference and identified Terri DeGazelle, Dara Sanders Dorcas, and Ryan Jacobson as potential authors to invite to our elementary schools. Our schools serve K-4 students. Has anyone hosted a visit by these authors? Thank you. Mary Alice Anderson Continue

Dana Gilbertson My thoughts about the MEMO conference

I came away from the MEMO conference quite angry at Dr. Scott McLeod. I am at three elementary libraries this year with over 1,000 students that I teach in one week. I really didn't like his in your face attitude about getting out of the way if we don't start using the new Web 2.0 tools. But I have had a week to think about the things he said and I am ready to admit that I have just been "coasting" for a last few years and needed this kind of speaker to give me a wake up call about my profession… Continue

Anne Marie Griffin ZM elementary

The new year has begun and I am getting in the swing of the new school, schedule, students and staff. It is great to be able to focus on one library and one group of students. I love walking down the hall and recognizing them all. The biggest challenge has been to figure out SELCO and Horizon. I have been spoiled using Destiny for the past few years. SELCO may have more features and has much better ILL, but it is a little clunky and counter intuitive. I know that I will figure it out and am so e… Continue

Marc Johnson MEMO Conference - "Did you Know"

This is a cross-post of a blog that I have started called "MnEdTech". The original can be found at: http://mnedtech.blogspot.com/ It has been awhile and it is utterly amazing how fast time flies when the school year is getting underway and we are in the "normal" swing of education. During the past several days, I was in attendance at the Minnesota Educational Media Organization's (MEMO) annual Fall conference. MEMO is a professional o… Continue

Dawn Nelson After the Fall Conference

I am sorting through the notes, advertisements and business cards, and memories of the 2009 MEMO conference which took place in Rochester. It would be difficult to select a favorite session or most valuable opportunity as there were so many. The weather was dreary but that inside the excitement of the event was obvious. And already the ideas are beginning for next year’s conference. With Mary Mehsikomer as a conference chair and Gina Light and Leah Larson as program chairs, anticipation is alre… Continue

Leslie Erickson Fun @ Rochester MEMO

Being an older person, I must disagree a bit with one comment from our conference stating we should leave the profession if we aren't doing all we can to empower students with up-to-date technology. I am more than willing to join the fray and learn all the new techie tricks, but I cannot totally throw away the books in print. Many of my students are befuddled by the massive amount of words on a page of a database and quickly ask me to supply them simply with a book instead. We still don't have e… Continue

Brad Galvan Diane Chen's Blog Post about Our Products

Biography reports? ARGH! I need more resources March 26, 2009 We are counting down 19 days to our TCAP testing. Then what will the students be doing for the rest of the school year? It appears they'll be spending all of their time in the library researching. Teachers I haven't seen outside grade level meetings, except when they blow a projector bulb or have technology problems, are suddenly signing up for days and days of research. Take our math department that will prepare biography projects… Continue

Marc Johnson Satisfy your inner geek...

This is a cross-post of a blog that I have started called "MnEdTech". The original can be found at: http://mnedtech.blogspot.com/ The older I get the more I realize I don't know. When it comes to the hard core world of networking, I'm really on the periphery. So... I was looking to satisfy my inner geek with a little information on VLANs and I stumbled across a website that looks like it might be quite useful for those of us who are NO… Continue

Marc Johnson Technology on the school supply list...

This is a cross-post of a blog that I have started called "MnEdTech". The original can be found at: http://mnedtech.blogspot.com/ OK... August is here and I'll now acknowledge the multitude of "back to school" promotions going on at every retailer (even Menard's is selling school supplies). We've downloaded the supply lists for our 1st and 8th grade children and are now planning our contribution to the economy. Fortunately, the highest… Continue

Marc Johnson A little late to the party... but here we are.

This is a cross-post of a blog that I have started called "MnEdTech". The original can be found at: http://mnedtech.blogspot.com/ One of my favorite episodes of the 1980's (and early 90's) sitcom, "Cheers" is when main character Sam Malone, the "once was" major league pitcher now tending bar in a small watering hole in Boston "where everybody knows your name," is given the opportunity to fill in as a TV sports reporter. Part of his duties are to do a… Continue

Anne Marie Griffin New Job!

When Longfellow finishes up Thursday I will no longer be with the Rochester Public Schools. In the Fall I will be starting as the elementary library media specialist at Zumbrota-Mazeppa. I look forward to the challenges of work in a small district and the delights of working in one building after 3 years of two and three buildings. I will also be completing my masters degree project in 09-10 so having a .6 position will be good. I am delighted that there was a job opening in the area when Roches… Continue

Mary Alice Anderson Rick Chrustowstki

Wisconsin author/Illustrator RIck Chrustowski visited the 6 elementary schools in Winona this winter. The students and staff loved him! He described the book writing and publishing process, showed slides, and drew a special picture which he doanted to each school. People are still talking about him. He writes literacy non-fiction for younger students. The books look easy because they are small and highly illustrated, but they are packed with great information. Mary Alice Anderson Continue
